Every year, the Bull Run Mountains Conservancy hosts its annual fundraising event to celebrate another year of successful stewardship of the region. We invite you to join us and choose the cause you're most passionate about: Education, Research, or stewardship. Your generous donation will directly support our critical work in that area, making a tangible difference in preserving this region for generations to come.

Research
For our most current research project, BRMC partnered with the Institute for Integrative Conservation at William & Mary in the fall of 2022 to explore Nature-Based Solutions, specifically the potential of carbon markets to incentivize conservation-focused land management. This research project aims to determine the viability of integrating the carbon market as a land management strategy by quantifying carbon storage within the region and understanding the values local landowners place on their property. As part of this work, student researchers have developed a toolkit to help landowners understand various conservation strategies. This toolkit will walk landowners through the basic steps and provide helpful insight into the various approaches an individual can take to help preserve the Bull Run Mountain Region.

Stewardship
Directly under our stewardship arm of the organization we seek activities to collaborate, create, and provide opportunities for the general public to engage in active stewardship projects.
Some of our efforts included:
-
Partnership with White House Farm Foundation as an active partner in their weekly Friday Conservation Corps volunteer event.
-
29 year Adopter of Beverley Mill Dr. in the VA State Adopt-a-Highway program
-
Bluebird trail that includes Leopold’s Preserve, Mountain House, and Wakefield school with data entered in Cornell’s Nestwatch program.
-
William and Mary partnership to produce research that will support our efforts to engage communities and policy makers in exploring/recognizing the value of the Bull Run Mountains ecosystems and landscapes.

Our focus is to assist, facilitate, and sponsor studies that help track the ecological effects to this region caused by climate change, deer overpopulation, human impacts, invasive species, among other concerns. We will involve youth and the general public in citizen science projects to advance the collection of critical baseline data while increasing the pool of good stewards of the region. When conducting or sponsoring research, we will ensure proper permits are secured, recent protocols are reviewed and followed, collaboration with stakeholder organizations or individuals is pursued, and that results are shared in peer-reviewed scientific journals or technical reports when appropriate.
