Service Description

"Old-Growth Forests: Ecosystems that Benefit Communities" presented by Brian Kane, the mid-Atlantic regional manager for the Old-Growth Forest Network. Brian will discuss the ecological qualities and benefits of old-growth forests and share several examples from notable old-growth forests in the mid-Atlantic. He will also discuss some of the common threats to the forests in the present day. Did you know? Two forests in Prince William County have been honored with membership in the Old-Growth Forest Network: the Bull Run Mountains Natural Area Preserve and Leopold's Preserve. Brian Kane is the mid-Atlantic regional manager for the Old-Growth Forest Network. He has been a resident of northern Virginia most of his life, and practiced as a landscape architect for 25 years in the region. He also taught at Virginia Tech and University of Maryland, and served as director of sustainability for a K-12 school. He enjoys kayaking on the tributaries of the Bay and hiking in beautiful forests across the nation with his wife and daughters, and is a constant gardener at his Alexandria home.
