Bull Run Mountains Conservancy expands Youth Scholarship Program

Now Available—Scholarships for Chesapeake Watershed Workshop
Session One: June 22-24, 2009
Session Two: August 10-12, 2009

Bull Run Mountains Conservancy (BRMC) will offer 16 scholarships for youth ages 13-18 to attend an educational workshop focused on the conservation of the rivers and streams that flow into the Chesapeake Bay. Funding for the BRMC's Youth Scholarship Program has been provided by the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund*.

The Chesapeake Watershed Workshop will provide students with a hands-on look at headwater and major tributary habitats of the Chesapeake Bay and an overview of the most pressing watershed issues within our region. The three day workshop will begin with an exploration of headwater streams in the Bull Run Mountains. Day two will be spent downstream along Little Bull Run, analyzing the impacts of golf courses and development on piedmont perennial streams, and day three will be spent in Turkey Run National Park along the banks of the Potomac River. At each location students will experience stream monitoring, vegetation analyses, and stream habitat and riparian buffer evaluations, in addition to learning about the natural history of the sites.

The Youth Outdoors Scholarship Program encourages children to spend time in the field, learning about and enjoying nature. Each scholarship participant will receive waived fees for the BRMC program.

Interested individuals please contact BRMC at mk@brmconservancy.org or 703-753-2631 or BRMC, P.O. Box 210, Broad Run, Virginia 20137.

* Funding for the Chesapeake Bay Restoration Fund is generated from the sale of "Friends of the Chesapeake" license plates. We thank all Virginians who have contributed through the purchase of a Chesapeake Bay license plate and provided support to community-sponsored "grass roots" efforts to restore the Chesapeake Bay.
