Recent Articles from FoBR NewslettersFoBR Welcomes New Executive Directorby Harry LeachOn March 1st, 2000, Michael Kieffer joined Friends of Bull Run as our new executive director. Prior to coming here, he was a naturalist at the Piedmont Environmental Center in High Point, North Carolina. During his four-and-a-half years there, Michael served as an interactive interpreter of the ecological principles in the mountain, piedmont and coastal plain ecosystems. He also developed and taught environmental education programs for schools and the public as well as introducing backpacking ecotours and participating in prescribed burns at the center. (Prescribed burns are the use of controlled fires that aid the regeneration of certain types of trees and prevent the over-accumulation of underbrush in forested areas.) Michael was also responsible for recording field observations of migratory birds in the preserve. Michael is a native of Buffalo, New York and is a summa cum laude graduate of the State University of New York College at Fredonia, with a bachelor of science degree in biology. Michael is well qualified to lead the Friends of Bull Run into the new century. His outside passions are the Buffalo Bills and Sabers football and hockey teams - except, of course, when they play the Redskins and the Capitals. He likes to play ice and roller hockey, tennis and his drums - excuse me, his percussion instruments. Michael has been hiking the Bull Run Mountain Natural Area, meeting the neighbors, and learning about the local area. He is looking forward to meeting all of our members and visitors to the mountain. He can be found in his Mountain House office most days from around 9:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. He may be reached by phone at (703) 753-2631.
